Description:
Today I try an Australian accent. Stick News: New York bans offensive word I've never studied American history before. I got this info from stuff I read on the net. I hope there are no mistakes, please let me know in the comments if you think there are. I wanted to cover this issue because I think it is an interesting language issue. I also think students going to the US should know about the history of this word and why it is offensive. Technical issues: Today's show was so long... I usually save it MPG1 - but that was going to be 128MB (over YT's limit). So I saved it as a Window's Media file and uploaded it. The audio quality was so bad I decided to delete it. I saved another way - and the size was OK, but the frame size is strange... so there are some black strips. latiosofaltomare ::: Favorites Wowee, long show, today, Sarah! My internet connection can't keep up with the playing speed... x3 Why can't words just be words? I understand that some can be offensive because the meaning of the word carries farther than just hearing it, but... I bought the Nebulis CD you get your music from... Can't stop listening to it, actually. :) See you round! 07-03-03 23:05:09 _____________________________________________________
ozpace ::: Favorites Nice Oz vs NZ comparison! To me your "this" still sounds pitched a little far forward, but the "big" was good, as was the general copying of lesley56. Ganbatte! (Like this really matters...) 07-03-04 08:42:25 _____________________________________________________
poolman802 ::: Favorites this show looked like a lot of work! very cool 07-03-04 11:02:10 _____________________________________________________
stone1home ::: Favorites According to H.L. Mencken, the term "nigger" comes from the Irish "nay gur". The original use of "nigger" traces to a poem by Robert Burns, published in 1786. Both terms stem from the much earlier "Negro", which is the Spanish and Portuguese word for black. By the late 1500's, the English were using "neger". stone1home ::: Favorites There is solid evidence that Australia was first discovered by the Portuguese, but they kept it a secret because they were there in violation of a treaty. thedailyenglishshow ::: Favorites Thanks : ) I got carried away reading stuff about American history. Very interesting ... and sad. I know there's still a lot of room for improvement - but I think us humans have come a long way since the days of lynching and slavery. 07-03-04 21:02:36 _____________________________________________________
thatamericangirl ::: Favorites I had to laugh at the screencap for this episode! I think it's important to know that many people of African origin (particularly African Americans) in this country use the term "nigga" to sort of take back the word, much like the gay community has taken back "fag" and "queer". So among people in those groups, those words are endearing... but don't try using them if you aren't a member of that category! 07-03-05 00:06:01 _____________________________________________________
2of6Solutions ::: Favorites Great video. You express yourself really well. I think it is very useful to not just say "don't say that word, it's offensive" but to discuss why it is offensive. Maybe some people use the word because they have never thought deeply about why it is offensive... then they would benefit from hearing your calm explanation. 07-03-06 02:25:27 _____________________________________________________
