Description: Dr Sima Samar Dr Sima Samar is the Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) and United Nations special envoy to Darfur, Sudan. Dr Samar has led a life full of firsts, displaying remarkable courage and commitment in improving the lives of Afghan girls and women. At 18 she married and began her medical education at Kabul University, graduating in 1982 as the first Hazara woman to do so. In 1984 under the communist regime, her husband was arrested, never to be seen again. Dr Samar and her young son fled across the border to Pakistan where she worked as a doctor in a refugee camp. Her experiences exposed the terrible conditions many women refugees were living in, forbidden to see male doctors and receive basic health care. This prompted Dr Samar to establish the first women's hospital in 1987, later creating the Shuhada Organisation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing health care to Afghan women, training of medical staff and education. Often working in the face of threats to her own safety, Dr Samar defied the Taliban and opened 10 clinics and four hospitals for women and children, as well as establishing schools and literacy programs in rural Afghanistan. In 2001, Dr Samar was chosen to be the deputy premier of the post-Taliban interim government in Afghanistan, becoming the first woman to hold such a senior post. She later served as Minister for Women's Affairs. Dr Samar became chair of AIHRC after being forced to step down from her cabinet post when she began receiving death threats hoping to silence her repeated calls for equality and justice. In 2001 Dr Samar was the recipient of the Jonathan Mann Award for Health and Human Rights in recognition for her remarkable contribution to improving the basic human rights for girls and women in Afghanistan. She also received the 2004 Profile in Courage Award.

sarbadaran ::: Favorites Sima Samar, head of the Independent Human Rights Commission is a member of the central council of the pro-Iranian Regime Wahdat Party which is named by Human Rights Watch as war criminal.
