joness105639 ::: Favorites 2008-01-14 23:42:04 On the whole, I am certain he was, However, I have also read his "a grief observed". He had some very hard and painful times in his life. Though he was one of the brightest and best of the 20th century christian thinkers, it took him forever to learn first hand some of what he wrote in the four loves. I don't think he truly understood some of it until he married Joy Gresham. __________________________________________________
scati1971 ::: Favorites 2008-01-14 20:51:16 no you definitely dont, I grant u his british but hes northern Irish british, or whatever label they like. __________________________________________________
aussieguy55 ::: Favorites 2007-12-15 22:49:58 I have just read The Four Loves of C S Lewis. Its a book you want to read again and again and each time you get something more from it. The PBS dvd The Question of God deals with the lives and compares them. Lewis comes accross as the happier of the two men. __________________________________________________
joness105639 ::: Favorites 2007-12-12 21:08:01 I'll ask next time I'm in greek town. I wonder how many ways it acually was pronounced. Wouldn't it be fun to take a linguistics course in heaven? __________________________________________________
kidaz ::: Favorites 2007-12-12 08:36:07 We don't know if the Lewis's or our pronunciation is closest to the greek. I am prepared to change my pronunciation if a greek tells me to. __________________________________________________
joness105639 ::: Favorites 2007-12-12 07:39:08 i don't know how much that really matters. Just look for instance how differently you and i pronounce words. Even in my own country thre are many accents. I'm sure in Jesus' day this would have been true also. But you are right modern greek is the closest we can get. ag a pee... I wish I knew where lewis got that. __________________________________________________
kidaz ::: Favorites 2007-12-12 04:26:01 Well agape is a greek word isn't it? Anyhoo we should just look at how the modern greeks pronunce it. __________________________________________________
joness105639 ::: Favorites 2007-12-11 23:18:35 Perhaps it has something to do with the difference in schooling. Around the turn of the century latin at least was taught with a different pronunciation than it was only a few decades later. Maybe local accents had a greater influence back then. He was born in 1898. __________________________________________________
kidaz ::: Favorites 2007-12-08 11:54:27 i'm british... well nearly ... and i find it odd how he pronunces it... well maybe it's the american influence on my church. __________________________________________________
joness105639 ::: Favorites 2007-12-08 11:46:27 You've gotta love the brits. :) __________________________________________________
kidaz ::: Favorites 2007-12-03 14:57:54 interesting. i've never heard agape pronunced that way... A-GA-pee as opposed to ah-GAH-pay. __________________________________________________
joness105639 ::: Favorites 2007-11-19 08:03:28 You can find most of the one I mentioned at your local library. If not try amazon. Should be found for less than 20 bucks each. I know the space trilogy was printed as recently as 10 years ago in paperback pilgrims regress has not been in print since the 60's but used copies are still cheap. __________________________________________________
ThatChristian ::: Favorites 2007-11-18 20:49:49 I have read Narnia twice. Maybe that will make up for the rest. ; ) __________________________________________________
colossus999 ::: Favorites 2007-11-18 19:14:26 I know what you mean. I found the first of the space trilogy in a used book store, and the last in a Christian book store, but the last was really expensive. I don't have the second one either. __________________________________________________
ThatChristian ::: Favorites 2007-11-15 21:08:33 I have had a bit of trouble getting my hands on C.S. Lewis books, so I haven't read any of those yet. : ( __________________________________________________ |
